Description

This Arctic Fox is a good companion to join the Snowy Owl I posted yesterday and may have a love hate relationship as the Fox enjoys the odd egg or two and the Owls take the pups.. They mate for life and are amazingly good survivors taking advantage of Polar bear kills and easily able to scrape a living on Lemmings and in conditions even Polar bears cant survive in.. An astonishing fact that I have read about is that if the time ever comes that the Vixen and cubs dont have enough food to survive the Dog Fox allows himself to be killed and eaten!! Also called the hare-footed fox, the arctic fox (Alopex lagopus) lives in dens burrowed into the hills and cliffs of the Arctic. In comparison to other types of fox, the arctic variety is small, with adults weighing in at just six to ten pounds. They have short legs and ears, heavy coats, and furry feet that enable them to live in the frigid arctic climate. Since arctic foxes do not hibernate throughout the winter, most shed their brownish blue summer coats in the fall and grow new white coats to blend in with their snowy surroundings. The types of arctic fox that keep their brownish blue colour all year long live on the coast where their dark colour isn't as conspicuous.

Beautiful image and interesting facts! I think I saw the same PBS show that Medley mentioned, and the "howl" of this small fox was most peculiar. Unique pose you have captured!

Again, I find the face something that takes my attention... The size of the jaw drop is incredible and seems to mean they can rip large chunks or carry back large pieces. the long needle-like nose and jaw is good for getting into tight places for that last bite of food. Lots of surface for picking up smells and tasting on the wind... The ears are shorter than I would have expected by I see they are deeply cupped so they must have very good hearing as well. The information on the shortage of food is new to me too although I know it happens with spiders very often. Amazingly appealing shot done well and the information is fascinating and unforgetable.
