Your drawing would not have had the same effect without the smoke stack. I think the amount of plume escaping the stack is perfect. More the suggestion of, (the pollution/industry) then being overwhemling and drawing the eye away from the rest of the composition. Perhaps I am leaning towards the verdict that it is not imposing. The concept is an interesting one. The clutch of buildings (Humanity/Industry?) contained within the trunk of the tree (the natural world?) with long reaching roots (life sustainers?) that are tied into the maze of piping (waterworks?. I come away with several interpretations of this piece, which means you have done a wonderful job of keeping your audience's attention!
