Description

A ceramic sculpture I painted with craft paints. It's much more beautiful in the garden! This image seemed to drain color out of it's brilliant real look! Believe it or not, I was looking t a photo of me at 8 years old to get this face and hair color. The wings were a killer to paint cause the colors didn't want to work to blend. It was pure hell for a piece to look so magical and angelic! Hope you enjoy it Judy! It's nothing special to you viewers maybe, but it's a treasure to me and my kids. PEACE and Blessings to Everyone! Kathleen

Nice work, Kathleen. This is perfect for young children in the garden. My sons and daughter used to paint rocks, 'rescued' from the seaside, to display either in their bedrooms, or in the garden. Sadly we never had an angel in our garden ( well at least one we could see ... ;o) ) Having a 'deprived childhood', I did not have a 'pet rock', nor even got to indulge in finger-painting etc. Instead I got to 'freshen up' the faded, dusty surfaces of my gran's old first-generation plastic flowers, using AIRFIX and HUMBROL enamel paints. Recently I have applied old, non 2D techniques to similar projects. I used to paint model soldiers from 15-25mm/0.6"-1.0" in height, quite regularly for my past time of wargames. Such figures, and models, and buildings only have to look good from about 45-60cm/18-24" away. They are not collectors' models, and are usually finished in matt acrylic, and varnished to protect the surface. Then, when I thought I had hung my paintbrushes up for ever, a couple of years back, my parish priest asked me to 'renovate' an outside statue of the Virgin and Child. This standa about 1.4m/4'7" high. It had last been painted about 40 years previously, but was in a bad way by then. I used acrylic media, and an old photo to guide me. The statue was stuck onto a solid concrete plinth, so could not be moved indoors, out of the weather, and the everpresent insects and midges ( they stick quite successfully to acrylic paint, unfortunately ). Nearing the end of the renovation, I mixed a pearlescent white with a thick acrylic primer and exterior acrylic varnish, to colour the swaddling cloth, intending to shade it the next day. Overnight the painted surface cracked and the next morning the cloth looked as if it was textured, from about 3m/10' or so, the distance at which it would be viewed normally. It is positioned halfway up a steep garden slope, at the rear of the church. I did have trouble with the skin colours, trying to achieve a Middle Eastern olive finish. I eventually returned to a figure painting technique known as 'Dry Brushing', or as one of the older ladies put it, I applied layers of makeup to Our Lady and the Baby Jesus! Since then I have tackled smaller and larger statues, including remodelling, or replacing broken appendages, hands usually. I use a light, nylon reinforced, air hardening clay. I model it with dentists' tools. People used to bring me their rosary beads to fix, now they bring in old family statues.. Regards from a cold, wet Glasgow, John.
