Description

It is just about impossible to take a picture of this basilica without any tourists in it, especially during the summmer. This basilica stands on the site of an earlier 10th century church. The new basilica was started in 1063 on the plan of a Greek cross, and took 10 years to complete. Topped by five bulbous domes, the church is modelled on Constantinople's Church of the Twelve Apostles and was intended to compete with St. Peter's in Rome. Over the next 500 years, the church was enlarged and embellished and the resulting building is a blending of influences from Byzantine, European, and Islamic cultures. The basilica was not intended as the cathedral of Venice, but rather as a private chapel of the doges, who made their public appearances here (Lonely Planet, Italy, 1993). This picture was taken on 4 July 2007. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my previous upload.

Magnificent architecture. Sometimes when the photo includes hordes of tourists it adds to the fascination of the building and its history. Another great capture Sig.

This Venetian series is of great beauty, full of charm and 'douceur de vivre' (sorry, I couldn't translate this into English, as it's a concept!). A great photo, with impressive details.
