Description

Pleiades, in astronomy, famous open star cluster in the constellation Taurus; cataloged as M45. The cluster consists of some 500 stars, has a diameter of 35 light-years, and is 400 light-years distant from the earth. Six stars are easily visible to the naked eye—Alcyone (the brightest), Electra, Celaeno, Sterope, Maia, and Taygete. Known as the Seven Sisters, this group was named by the Greeks for the seven daughters of Atlas and Pleione; the seventh Pleiad was, according to legend, lost or in hiding. Many faint stars associated with the other six are visible with the telescope; one of these stars may have been much brighter and visible to the naked eye in ancient times, thus accounting for the many early references to seven stars. The Pleiades cluster is 150 million years old, making it a young star cluster. ------------------------------------------------- Many a night I saw the Pleiads, rising thro' the mellow shade, Glitter like a swarm of fireflies tangled in a silver braid. - Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1837-8 ------------------------------------------------- Enjoy! Take Care, Love, T.-

Whirling feather-what a wondeful name. How did i miss this...wonderful just wonderful. Im sure you know of this...well here is a couple links anyway-i am so mystified by the giganticness of the immense space between (rocks/intergalatic gass balls/renigade "whatever") there and our temporary heart beats! http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/archivepix.html http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/mro/ http://www.spaceweather.com/ http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Mars_Express/ At least those. ..Amzazing, looking quite clearly of the suface of another planet-but then again where we could be if everyone that wastes their time watching other people run around chasing balls of various substances, spent that time/money/energy, building(being awarded the moneys paid their Heros) "rovers" in their garages. Or spent the money, devizing ways of killing mass numbers of fellow humans(then pretending to be peace loving rightous godlike wannabe's), on the exhillerating and wonderous exploration of their universe instead of their own insignificantly miniscule missfireing molectular mind mishappning. I feel a LITTLE bit better/bitter(sad actually)....hehee! Enjoy!-it takes practice....& patientce.
