Description

Another addition to the waterbird menagerie we're creating this year. The Northern Shoveler, Anas clypeata, is perhaps the most outwardly distinctive of the dabbling ducks. It inhabits wetlands across much of North America. Its elongated, spoon-shaped bill has comblike projections along its edges, which filter out food from the water. The bill of the Northern Shoveler is about 6.5 cm (2.5 inches) long. The bill has has about 110 fine projections (called lamellae) along the edges, for straining food from water. Thanks for stopping by and any comments.

What an amazing-looking bird! The pose is perfect. It looks like a decoy. (Hmmmmm. I guess that's why decoys look that way, huh?) Assuming this is another shot through the car window, I'm totally impressed! Heck - I'm impressed anyway! Great capture.

This is another great picture of a bird that I am not familiar with. The bill is really interesting, and the colors are beautiful.

This is a beautiful capture of a Slobeend (= Dutch, eend = duck; slob is difficult to translate and has to do with the feeding by means of the lamallae!!), around the area where we live we don't see them very often!! Excellent shot!! Have a very nice evening Henk

Nicely caught low profile, Dennis. I saw one but wasn't able to get a shot. An odd but pretty duck.

A fascinating critter! It looks a little like a mallard male. Love the DOF with the rippling waters :)
