Description

The infamous "robber's captain" Johann Grasl was a figure, which inspired the imagination of the people by many decades. Countless stories are also told even today about him. It was at the time of the French's wars, soldiers moved through the country. At that time there was virtually no police. Grasl perpetrated primarily armed robberys and, because rich persons seemed to him too well secure, he robbed and murdered the poor. Besides, he was extremely bestial, a human life was nothing to him. Whether a traveler, an old widow or a lonesome lumberjack - nobody was safe before Grasls hold-up. The attacked could save their life maybe, if they telled Grasl an other proper person for a robbery. A woman who worked as undercover agent succeeded in catching him. As a "thief", she was put in prison - in the cell in which also Grasls concubine was imprisoned. After she had won the confidence öf the prisoner, she organized a "escape" from this prison. Grasls concubine went now on the shortest way to the hidden place of Grasls gang, an inn. The agent-woman mixed opium in the wine and as the criminals been awaken from the sleep, they already lay in heavy chains. Grasl confessed 207 felony crimes. He was executed in 1818 in Vienna. 60.000 people watched when he was hanged. Sounds like a story for a movie - but it was a true event...

Strange and mysterious story. Sorry that the Frenchies were a little bit responsible of disorder and confusion in Austria during the early 19th century!
