Description

This water bus stop is named after the famous bridge behind it, 'Rialto'. Water bus stops are all along the Grand Canal. The Grand Canal has been described by the French writer Philippe de Commines in the 15th century as 'the finest street in the world, with the finest houses'. The Grand Canal meanders through Venice in a huge upside down S. It is 3.5km long, from 40m to 100m wide, and on average about 6m deep. It is lined by buildings ranging from brightly colored houses to stone palaces, dating from every period in the city's history and representing various archtectural styles (Lonely Planet, Italy, 1993). It is used by water busses, water taxis, commercial boats that supply the various stores in he city, private boats, and gondolas. There are several water bus lines that operate boats in both directions along the Grand Canal, and all the boats use the same stops. It is not uncommon to see one or two boats waiting, while another is discharging and loading passengers. These water busses are operated by two people, the driver and the conductor. The conductor besides collecting the fare also secures the water bus to pilings while stopped to assure save boarding and discharge of passengers. This picture was taken on 4 July 2007.
