Description

The Northern Shoveler, related to the Blue-winged and Cinnamon teal, favours broad, shallow marshes where it can use these comb-like teeth along the edges of its large bill to strain aquatic animals, plants, and seeds from the water. Looks almost like a comical smile here! Like the two teal, Drake shovelers like this one wear eclipse plumage until February, much later than ducks whose courtship begins in the Autumn. Though less numerous than in ancient times, the Northern Shoveler and other marsh ducks have lately increased in numbers due to the restoration of wetland habitats, which in this day and age with tidal river floodings that are prevented far more by such areas, and until recently has been poorly understood. So the future looks brighter in the longer term both for the ducks and humans who live in such regions prone to flooding. Thanks for taking time to look and any comments you care to make
