Description

Meet Bertha, she is simply gorgeous. I was so amazed how gentle the Buffalo are. She had her backside up against the fence (which was only chicken wire). She could have easily pushed this fence down with one push backward and didn't. Noticing that she was trying to relieve an itch; I reached in with both hands one on each side of her rumped and scratched. It was enthralling to witness that such a large cumbersome animal could undulate her body so gracefully. Her whole body swayed from head to tail! I then took my camera from the post I had set it on and she just turned to look at me. It seems that she was smiling in thanks. Whether or not she actually was, this was just an awesome experience! It made me think of a poem I had written. Paths Crossed Question not why I am here Embrace the fact that I am Our moment may be fleeting But our memory is forever

Looks like you made a new friend Michelle. So who owns Bertha? Any idea how old she is? Very cool looking animal. I just hope you don't scratch every buffalo's butt you meet, some may not be so friendly..lol. Great photo and poem. Bravo and hugs with kisses from Dave :^)

Wonderful story you shared. I have had a few experiences while out taking pictures where I will notice a horse observing me or like today this incredibly cute dog watching me from behind his gate.. I ended up sitting there playing with him through the gate for quite a while , and taking a few pictures of him, I think they love the attention, and company just like anyone else would.

They are magnificent creatures but not always so gentle. I think this one is used to people and young too. We visited one at Buffalo State Park and it rushed the fence. Scared me and made me feel sorry for it...all cooped up with tons of people staring at it everyday. Bertha seems happy though and it's a wonderful capture. A good scrath on the rump always makes for good friendships with animals.
