Monday Laundry Day on Marken!!!
Outdoor, the Laundry does get a very fresh and clean smell by drying in the wind (as I have been told LOL!!)
Despite the fact that most of the houses on Marken are made out of wood, just like the traditional boats, there are only a very few trees on this island!!
The Marken peninsula is situated 20 km. north of Amsterdam in The Waterland region of Holland . This beautiful fishing village painted in full traditional colours offers you a fascinating insight into Dutch history, dating back to the 12th century.
The wooden houses and architecture that form Marken are packed tightly together on earth mounds. Previous flooding of the area due to dike failures has forced the inhabitants of Marken to construct huge earth mounds in the bid to build on higher ground.
The dike that attaches Marken to the mainland was finally finished in 1957.
The Island Marken was before 1932 in the “ZuiderSea”. A dike (the “afsluitdijk”; 20 miles long) was constructed and in 1932 the Zuidersea was turned into the IJssellake which turned over the years from saltwater into freshwater. The whole eco-system had to change as well.

What is it about the roofs? They have wooden grids on them it seems? I love the idea of wash day. I was unhappy when me son insisted I take his gift of a clothes dryer several years ago because the smell of my clothes and linens that had been dried on the line was gone forever. I feel very at home looking at this photo.

Ik denk dat ze op Marken toch ook wasdrogers hebben met dat weer van afgelopen week, Still a wonderful shot of this loundry in the wind, and I know, they smell very fresh, after dried this way. RS
