Description
I had several titles going round my head, but I choose the shortest. This was a cold October morning about 07:00hrs, a few years back at Hollingworth Lake. Alan's(artaddict2) latest uploads prompted this one. There is a rowing club situated at the lake and has been for as long as I can remember. They take their rowing seriously and practice as often as they can and can be seen most mornings and nights. The hills in the distance, where the rising sun has started to light them up, is now dominated by a wind farm, still in the proccess of being built. Several gigantic wind turbines can now be seen from this location, although I do not like them, I believe they are needed as an alternative source of energy.
The sun is to my back in this shot, slowly rising, peeping over the top of the Pennines(known as the backbone of England), high enough to light up the distant hills but not yet high enough to warm the Lake.
The Pennines for those interested, start in Derbyshire, and continue through several counties right up to the Scottish border. Britain's first long distance footpath, the Pennine Way, runs the full length of the Pennine chain and is 429 kilometres (268 mi) long.
Back to the Lake. Alan has already mentioned that the lake was built in 1800, as a feeder for the Rochdale Canal, the canal did not open until 1804 and cost in the region of £500,000. The Hollingworth Lake Rowing and Regatta Club was formed in 1862, with the first Regatta taking place in 1866, with £50.00 in prizes. On 30th of June, 1877, Captain Webb(the first man to swim the English Channel) swam the lake. In 1879 a very cold Winter, a horse and trap crossed the lake on ice, at this time it is said my grandfather sold hot chestnuts from a stand on the ice. In 1893 a great swimming match was held at the lake. McCusker, an American v J Nuttall, for world championship. J Nuttall won easily, 40,000 people attended.
Here endeth the history lesson for today. The facts above were taken from the Rochdale Observer, 1977. There was an article writen in that paper, with more information, that I kept as a keepsake. The information was about Littleborough, where Hollingworth Lake is and was also my place of birth.
Thanks for stopping by for a look and for any comments you care to make.
May the sun shine down on you, where ever you are.

Lovely serene capture... I can almost hear the quiet creak and swish of the oars~ Love sunrises... Although I am usually awake somewhere around 5:30 and up around 6 I don't often take the time to more than peak out as the light comes up. Different story when I'm on vacation, I see the predawn to sunrise event every morning~

So you were graced with this lovely lake around the corner from you as a young boy? What a fantastic place this is. Your history is fascinating and your own memories seem to come through in this shot as well. The rowers work much too hard in this peaceful scene :-)
