Description

Picture taken last Saturday (March 8th, 2008) in Brussels (Marché aux herbes, 68) Rispah, 38 years old, Kenya. My husband died of AIDS thirteen years ago. One day, I felt my health going down hill. I couldn't work any more; I kept getting sick. I was tested seropositive. Of the three women who spent time with my husband, I’m the only one still alive. I had no one to turn to. I was alone, with my two children and my sister’s baby, whom I took in when my sister died. Sometimes I didn’t even have any food. I’ve had the luck of benefitting from antiretroviral treatment against the AIDS virus. I quickly recovered my strength, whereas before I was weak and sick. Three months later, I could walk again, and even work. I can now pay for this house, and pay for my children’s schooling.

"Women are heroes“ proclaim Médecins sans frontières (MSF) and the activist JR on the occasion of International Women’s Day. JR has visited Sierra Leone, Liberia, Southern Soudan and Kenya, returning with striking portraits of women taken with the help of his 28 millimetre lens. He wants to share their stories, first by exhibiting them in their country of origin, then in the framework of spectacular exhibitions hosted in several cities throughout the world. As from 8th March 2008, the faces and expressions of eight women are splashed accross the walls of Brussels. Their gigantic portraits will make their presence felt in the streets of the town centre reflecting how vital their role is in the daily routinesof their countries...
