Description
I made this specifically as an entry into a recent contest with the theme of "Magic & Myth." My main purpose for competing was to push myself, both artistically and technically, so that I could get myself out of this Beginners gallery and feel comfortable posting in other galleries. Guess I'm not there yet - LOL!
Sources: Strictly Bryce: I modeled the flowers, petroglyphs, waterfall, and three sisters in Bryce. Texture for the flowers by Chemical Studios; texture for the petroglyph on the right by Steve Lareau.
Technique note: I got the water to sparkle this way by not antialiasing it during the render.

Sip, saw your last texture post :-) I think you did a really good job here :-) The light and rocks ...rock :-) The water is also very good. However, I think maybe the flowertexture is a bit too "heavy" How about taking the flowers, and lightening and softening their contour in PSP ?`Without losing the pointyness ? Some specularity could also help, if they're wet, they may glitter a bit. Also increase the contrast between the light and the dark a bit, maybe ? Hope this helped, ~S

Yeehaw! Bless your heart, spinner, for some comments I can do something with. I'm especially proud of the rocks with the petroglyphs, 'cause I modeled 'em from scratch and they're based on real petroglyphs. I think you're absoluely right on about the flowers, both in terms of the changes I should make and maintaining their essence. I'm not sure about increasing the overall contrast. Not because I necessarily disagree with you, but because it took a LOT of work with the lighting to get even this much contrast. This is obviously an area I need to experiment with and learn much more about. Thank you sooooo much!

This picture should not be posted in the beginner galery - honestly. The texturing is great, and the trick with nit antialiasing the water is very clever and was sucessful. Congrats for that nice piece of digital art.

You're already more advanced than a Beginner. Gee, I couldn't even begin to do work this good.
firefly
Yep, I agree with spinner about the flowers and with derjimi and ronknights about moving out of the beginners gallery! The water is especially great.

Thanks so much Jimi, Ron, and firefly! Until I'm more comfortable with Bryce, though, and feel better about getting the pictures out of my head and onto the virtual canvas, I'm just gonna stay here. For a while I thought it was because I was a wimp and a coward, but in fact I do believe I'm making an honest assessment of my own work at this stage.

That's great water, and I love the petroglyphs. It's amazing to me that you did all of this inside of the program. I think you're definitely ready for the "big time"....You are a really talented "beginner". I wouldn't even post at Renderosity for a year after I started into digital art.....I think this rocks. I don't think anybody should apologize for those "flowers". They look exactly like Agave, and that's a legitimate plant! I hadn't thought of modeling an Agave in Bryce, but after this, I think I will! You are definitely NOT a beginner!
