Description
This is a moss rose (Portulaca grandiflora), it's one of my favorites because of its' similarity to a rose, but also it's perfectly suited to my area for growing-very drought hardy. The only thing that's a hassle about it is that you have to keep the seed pods that form (look just under the flower) off the plant if you want it to keep blooming profusely. It's usually easy to do, and it really makes a huge difference, but you have to do it almost every day when it's in full bloom. And if you want to cheat mother nature, have a pot of soil just under one of these in a hanging basket, and every time you remove the old blooms, do it over the pot. After a few times you'll end up with another pot of these, they self seed wonderfully!

One of my favorites in the Summer months....and yes, they can get to be quite a chore, cleaning off the spent flowers on a daily basis...I really like the orange colored ones, best. Have had the 'doubles' on occassion but you can't get seed from them... :-(((. Great capture.

Lovely macro. I grow these in my garden too and have the mixed colors. When they are in full bloom, its like a party going on. :-)I like this shot for the view of the flower but also for the great show of "leaves."

beautiful! The council plant these on the cliff gardens because of their drought resistance.

I thought this was a nice shot, and then I looked up "moss rose," because I'm unfamiliar with them. Now I think this is a GREAT shot. These flowers are only an inch wide!! Awesome macro.
