Description

This FB-111 was on static display on the flightline of Williams AFB, Arizona during the Phoenix 500 Air Races in March 1995. The FB-111 is a fighter bomber built by General Dynamic and has variable geometry wings. These wings make it extremely versitile. In the fully swept mode the wing angle is 72 degrees and the width is 31-ft. 11-inches. In the fully extended mode the wing angle is 16 degrees and is 63-ft. wide. The aircraft is 73-ft. 6-inches long and 17-ft. 1.5-inches high. It came on line during the Viet Nam War in the late 1960s and had a revolutionary terrain following radar for low-level, high-speed flight. It was capable of supersonic flight at sea level (Mach 1.2) and speeds of Mach 2.5+ at high altitude. It has two turbofan afterburning engines and the pilot and weapons system officer sit side by side in ejectable capsules. In 1986 is was used to bomb Libya after a Berlin nightclub bombing that killed several US servicemen that was traced to Libya sponsored terrorists. Despite the fact that France, Spain, and Italy denied the US overflight rights the mission to take care of Kadafi was successfully carried out by FB-111 from Lakenheath RAF, UK and other US Air Force and US Navy carrier-based aircraft. Not much was publicly heard from Kadafi after that. This picture was taken in March 1995 and later scanned. Thank you for viewing and commenting on my last upload.

Stunning Point of View Sig, very impressive shot indeed. Fascinating write-up. Thanks Sig. My son had a computer simulater game of an F-III maybe 10 years back, I tried to have a go but I could never land the thing, kids are always better than the dads at that computer stuff! (well it is in my case!) I remember you would upload bombs and air to air misiles etc. I distinctly remember a bomb or weapon called Maverick.

Wow! Thanks for the nostalgia Sig. Another interesting tidbit about this plane is when the pilot and nav have to exit the plane in an emergency, unlike most fighters, the whole contained module with both men enclosed, exits the fuselage. Do I spy a C-130 in the background? Thank-you again. :)
