Description

Venice. This head is almost hidden in a corner of Saint Mark's balcony. I didn't find any reference to it in books or internet. It's made of red porphyry rock, an imperial exclusive, coming form mount Porfiritis, in Egypt, facing the red sea (been there, and it must have been hell to excavate, take it downhill and to the Nile, a hundred miles away, and then on). It should be somehow associated with the four porphyry figures on the square corner. If so, it should be dated around 300 a.d., coming from Constantinoples.
