Description
This is another scanned image taken about fifteen years back, this diesel loco had been in the sidings at Castleton, Rochdale. It was there to let an express through on the main line. When it set off to leave the sidings something went wrong with the points and it crashed through the buffers. The interesting thing was this train was going to Leeds and it was pulling 14 tankers full of fuel from the Shell refinery in Ellesmere Port. They managed to unhook the tankers and drag them back down the sidings before bringing a crane in to lift the engine back on the rails. I took this from the station platform, just before they shut it off to the public. At this time the tankers were still coupled to the engine. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, and thankfully they didn't go up with a bang.
In 1984 another accident took place on this line, information relevent to this can be found here :- http://manchesterhistory.net/rochdale/transport.html A site developed by David Boardman and credit goes to him.

Thanks for sharing this one. It's not easy to get photos of even minor rail accidents due to safety concerns so this is something of a rarity.
