Description

Volcan Villarrica (2850m) in La Araucania District, Chile. A major eruption in 1971 opened a four-km fracture in Volcan Villarrica which emitted 30 million cubic metres of lava and displaced several rivers. One flow, down the Rio Challupen, was 14km long, 200 metres wide, and five metres in height (Lonely Planet, Chile and Easter Island, 1993). This picture was taken on 28 December 2003.
