Description

I met this gentleman and his horse on a Saturday afternoon in late August 2007, while strolling through a park at the foot of Mont-Royal. (The mountain that gives it's name to Montreal~ meaning real mountain!) Thanks for dropping by and for all the nice comments given this week! Peace and Love to All! Kathleen

We still have a mounted branch in Strathclyde Police, Kathleen. They are very useful at 'community policing', as well as chasing bank robbers in the city centre. Their main job, though is keeping order at football ( soccer ) matches, and controlling big demonstrations and marches. The riders and equipment are not allowed to weigh more than about 11st ( 154lbs / 70k ), because they feel sorry for the poor horse, allegedy. This restriction used to be very difficult to fill, since most police officers were male, 5'9 / 180 cm or taller, amd weighed asround 13st ( 182lbs / 83k ). This allowed female officers a more than equal chance of being successful applicants. By the 1990s height restrictions were lowered to allow Asian candidates a chance of meeting the physical requirements for joining, and lots of cops are now quite small. Unfortunately they did not attract many more Asian officers, perhaps due to their culture peer pressure. They may be smaller, and no longer Highlanders who played rugby, but today's officers are no pushovers. You should see them at 'Officer Safety Training' i.e baton. handcuffs and pepper spray training. They all get assertiveness training, apparently. Since a lot of small people, at least in the West of Scotland, are naturally agressive, I don't see how they need the training... ;o) Re 'Montreal', I was always told in History, and in French, that this meant 'Mountain Royal', not 'real' mountain. Perhaps the schools in Quebec teach something else... Warm regards, from a frozen Glasgow on Easter Saturday, John.
