Description
Book Cover for Harmonica and Gig, by Rachel Astruc, from Lilley Press.
The challenge was to create the Qverse, the virtual world of the book. Most of the book takes place in the Qverse and is the story of a conflict between Harmonica, a woman security coder and Gig, a cracker. Both are battling over control of Plaincode, the heart of the Qverse. Harmonica takes a dinosaur as her avatar, Gig a hare.
I wanted to avoid an over Matrixy look, with all the green and cascading code, though of course, some of that did get in here. Apart from the solid models, the image is composed up upwards of 70 opacity mapped planes. I've never used so many mapped planes to create an atmosphere, but I like the effect. Most textures for solid models are Max procedurals, aimed at making most of the world look virtual and made of Plaincode. I went through several versions before settling on one I was happy with, the editorial board was happy with and the author was happy with.
