Description
The dogwood has been adopted by the Christian religion for it's symbolism.
A story goes that the dogwood once grew as strong and tall as the mighty oak. It was chosen for the crucifixion, which distressed the tree greatly. Jesus had pity on the tree, and ever after it has grown small and twisted so that it can never again be used in such a manner.
The four petals or bracts form the shape of a cross.
The marks on the outer edges symbolize nail marks.
The center can resemble a crown of thorns.
The red berries represent the blood of Christ.
I thought it a fitting symbol for today.

This is a beautiful shot of one of my favorite flowers. I enjoyed the story of the Dogwood. I knew there was Christian story for it but I hadn't read it and found it interesting. Happy Easter to you.

Beautiful we have three of these trees in our yard, and my daughter asked me today if they were dead because they have yet to bloom and I told her no, its just an early Easter this year.. but we did notice tiny little buds appearing on them today. Happy Easter

I appreciate the information on the flower and its origins, although I don't celebrate the holiday. Anyway, lovely portrayal of the unique petals and pistil, Maria. BTW, auntietk also displayed a picture of dogwood in her gallery yesterday.
