Description

This is an 1860 Colt 44 caliber black powder 'cap and ball' pistol. Though he used many different hand guns this was one of the most familiar to James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickcok. It does not take cartridges; the cylinder must be loaded with powder and shot and a cap must be placed for each of its six rounds. It is a time consuming job so it was prudent to carry two . . . at least! Most of the westerns that I grew up watching on TV had the cowboys using double action, cartridge firing revolvers were introduced around 1868 but actually didn't get much use until nearer the last quarter of the 19th century. Cartridges were not yet very reliable during the time that the West was really being "tamed" and this cap and ball type weapon was most widespread. I was fortunate enough to have one of these pistols to hold in my hand while making this model. It's long and hefty and makes a wonderful sound when you pull back the hammer. When the weather is a bit better I might even go out and see how it shoots. Maybe I'll get a little taste of what old Wild Bill felt. Thanks fer Lookin! Ken ps: I had a hard time with the lighting on this. Blued steel is most reluctant to give up its detail, so please take a look at full size. I'm even tempted to post another angle of it to show it off a little better . . . maybe. lol!

Neat modelling and textures Ken and you can never have enough slick weapon renders ! Watch out for neighbours when you give it a try...or maybe not, if they are particularly nasty...hehe ! ~Cheers~

None of the grips were identical. What does that have to do with the patent? I have a book here, "COLT Single Action, From Patersons to Peacemakers" by Dennis Adler. 400 Park Avenue was their headquarters in the 80's.

Most black powder weapons did not stay deep blue very long. Unless they sat in somebody's desk or on their wall. I have a replica 1851 Colt Navy that I built from a kit If you want a quick action, you have to leave some slop between the cylinder and breech. If you want a hard hitting bullet, you tighten up the slack between the cylinder and breech so you leak out less gasses. You have a good model for a brand new gun. A gun that has been wearing in a holster on horseback for a year will have lots of wear in the bluing and will be predominantly steel grey in color.
