Description
There is documented evidence that there were buildings on this site prior to 1647 when rebuilding works were carried out.
The present building, which has four storeys and an attic, was built in the late 18 th century as a corn mill.
At this time there were two water wheels and two sets of milling machinery. The original wheel in this entrance would have been outside the building before the extensions were built.
The second wheel was probably removed in the 19 th century but the watercourse still passes under the building as can be seen by the trail ace entering the lower pool.
Around 1836 the Mill was bought by the Appleton family and converted into a factory making braid, which was used mainly for military uniforms.
This is when the capola on the roof would have been installed and a bell would have called people to work.
The 1851 census shows that 100 people were employed at Elstead.
