This is strange! There is a Medieval belief that the head of a toad contains a jewel and that this "goodly" jewel can be extracted with the prescribed conjure. The way I reacted to this image was that the "goodly" jewel of the mind is a callused toad given birth like Athena out of the head, only in this case, to be devoured instantly in the way Saturn devoured his own children. Is this your subconscious or mine?
