Description

December 8, 2170 Alien Artifact Discovered By ROBERT REDHORSE United Press Interplanetary Writer WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Department of Colonial Affairs Press Secretary John Wojcik announced today the discovery of an alien object of unknown origin on the surface of Danu, the third planet in the Alpha Mensae system. "The initial data looks very interesting, but we will have to wait for more information from the team sent to investigate in person," said Wojcik. "It looks to be a part of something much larger, but at the moment, we really can't be sure." The initial discovery was made nearly six months ago by a USGS robotic probe sent to survey the earth-like world for its potential as a target for the next wave of colonization. Based on the preliminary data concerning the alien object, President Carlos Valle ordered the Space Force to transport a team of civilian scientists to the site for a closer look at the object and to evaluate potential threats to planetary security. The USS Grissom departed earth orbit last Wednesday with a platoon of Space Force Rangers and scientific teams from Purdue University and the American Institute of Exoplanetary Science. "In a situation like this, we have no idea if the owners of the object might still be around," commented Major General James O'Connell, commander of the 12th Quadrant Fleet. "Our job is to ensure the safety of the scientific teams and basically stay out of their way while they do their work." The Grissom should arrive in the early hours of the morning at the site of the object, allowing the teams to begin their work as soon as the site is secured by the Rangers. "It will take a few days for the teams to properly analyze the artifact. I wouldn't expect any big news until sometime early next week," said Dr. Abdel Khader, Professor of Exoplanetary Science at Purdue University. Until then, we are left to wonder what the object is and who might have made it.
