Before traction mattered one first had to have an axle mounted so it would not bump steer or careen on the rough gravel paths and earthen lanes of the era. One did not want much traction of random veers. It was better to slide off into the ditch than to tumble upside down into it or trip on a curb rounding a corner. The sturdy wood spokes and fellows were no match for a curb. They had to yield to stone. The rubber was easily bruised by stones and what little fabric was inside would rot when exposed to moisture by weather checking in sun light.
