Description

"O, once in each man's life, at least, Good luck knocks at his door; And wit to seize the flitting guest Need never hunger more. But while the loitering idler waits Good luck beside his fire, The bold heart storms at fortune's gates, And conquers its desire." ~ Lewis J. Bates

Still going through some old work and found one that I didn't post at the time. It is another photograph of the Carnegie Guest House (or what is left of it) from my Cumberland Island excursion. I turned it into a false infrared image through postwork to give it a more dramatic and "haunted" feel. The Dungeness Guest/Recreation House, adjacent to the mansion proper was ravaged by fire and time. The "turret" and vegetation covered chimney behind it are part of what used to be one large building. Note the now lush thicket between the 'turret' and the far structure. It was not only used for guests, but was also the bachelor pad for the Carnegie's male children. Any Carnegie son who turned 15 years of age could call this palatial guest house his getaway. This is all that is left of the grand guest house which had several game rooms, an indoor swimming pool and guest quarters for various visitors to the Island. It boggles the mind the many millions invested in this subtropical paradise. What it must have been like in its heyday! Fifty years later, nature is doing a great job of reclaiming what was once all hers. You can see it photographed from another angle HERE. Other shots from this series can be found HERE. -----

With a guest house like this I bet they don't stay to long. Great postwork to turn it in to something so haunted looking. A great photo to work with.

Yes, the ghosts and spirits of the long departed have been seen leaving and entering the confines of this eerie edifice over these many years. Halloween heaven! The stuff of 1940s-50s horror movies. Anyway, wonderful lighting and ambiance in this shot.
