Description

This is our second of the litter. His nickname is Mr. Magoo. He was the first to open his eyes. I had alot of difficulty with this one. I used so many different mediums and so much experimentation that at one point, the drawing seemed hopeless. A trip to a proper art store and using better pencils, I manage to salvage the drawing. I was quite disatisfied with it, and due to my perfectionism disorder *grin* I brought it into photoshop to soften the image slightly and blend further to make up for the horrible scan job my crappy old scanner did. Apparently, it doesn't like dark work. As its really my first with so much dark, I was unaware of its...finickyness. Also, I always scan my work in stages, it helps clear up any artist blindness I might have so I can fix errors. I deliberately chose not to scan this drawing until it was completed. I did end up with a fairly large error, but managed to work the composition around it. Reference: Photo of kitten by me. Finger positioning from another photo with another kitten. Shading from the live model of my hands. Original: 6x6inches again. (Yes I will work bigger I swear..soon!) Paper: Canson 90lb cream. It is time to buy some nice fine toothed white paper I think. Darks really show the grain. Pencils: Whew...lets see. Standard 2b, b, hb, mechanical. Some 4b and 6b charcoal. (here was my biggest mistake!) White charcoal pencil, I really love this addition to my tools. 4b and 6b drafting pencils. (LOVE these new toys! they saved the image) Kneaded eraser, tissue, cotton swab, qtips. Photoshop: soften option on low, and smudge brush to fill in where the tooth showed no matter how much pencil I applied. Thanks for peeking!

I love the feeling and just know you got what you were looking for. suberp! back when I was doing illustration work I did a lot of black and white pencel and ink wash work. I found that using a paper tortillions were the best thing I ever found for blending and smudging pencil work. You can find them at most art supply sites and shops. when ever you need a clean surmace take a sand paddlke to it. cleans it in a second. Also to to create really dark areas i used water soluble ink for ink washes and layered it with the pencil work. just remember to let it dry before laying down a other layer of lead. again a wonderful drawing.

Wow ... I read every word you typed; it's so interesting to know how you do your work; even though i haven't a clue what Standard 2b, b, hb, mechanical, and 4b and 6b charcoal mean or any of the other tools you use.. well, I do know what a Qtip is! :D lol It's only impressive to me, that you are such a pro and are so darned good at this. The Best.
