This is something that I am sure can elicit many different interpretations depending on the person. I look at it this way - he is trapped and only the passing of time can free him eventually...but alas the clock has fallen apart, thus sealing his doom. In a final act of desperation he pitifully attempts to catch the pieces. Excellent piece!
