Description

The Rhino is one of Africa's famous BIG 5. I took this image in the Thorny Bush Private Game Reserve in South Africa. This picture also has a story! We stopped for 'sundowners' one late afternoon when these two approached us. Our ranger was very calm and they were literally across a dirt road from us when he eventually asked us to get back on the vehicle. Their eyesight is very bad but their sense of smell fairly accute. We were upwind from them and only when they got within 5 meters did they smell us. It was quite an adventure! The little passenger on his back is a Redbilled Buffalo Weaver and they are reknowned for keeping tics and other parasites off the bigger game. Unfortunately the light wasn't great and as you can imagine, I couldn't use my tripod and had to shoot with the camera handheld! Thank you for visiting my gallery. xx

Magnificent creatures and you are so blessed to have seen this first hand. A very good shot for low light and the bird is like the candle on the cake.

For a hand held picture as well as for bad light this picture is crisp and clear. Excellent capture.

It's a fantastic close up of this endangered and beautiful animal. I think you were wise because they can be quite cantankerous.

A fantastic picture. It looks too close for comfort for my taste though. Wonderful narrative about your adventure! SA is on my possibles to visit!

I notice one thing that the horn is very sharp. the zoos must keep them filed down here in Dallas except they have no black ones.I think it is an outstanding capture and you have lots of nerve to be off the vehicle
