Description

In February-March 2007, my husband Edouard (Elcet) and me spent two weeks in Senegal, where we had been invited by a French friend, Serge, who is established here. We lived first in Dakar, then we visited with our friend the Goree island, Saint-Louis of Senegal, Richard-Toll (both towns are in Northern Senegal), and finally the Southern part : Saly-Portugal, M’bour and Joal Fadiout. Serge began to work in Senegal twenty-five years ago. He speaks several local languages. All that allowed us very sympathetic contacts with people, who became friends for him. This image was taken in the family of Sidi and Sala, between Dakar and Saint-Louis, in a subdesertic area. Serge met with Sidi and Sala in very peculiar circumstances, just as he established in Senegal. Sala, then 16 years old, was pregnant and very near to deliver. But the birth of her child seemed very difficult. She had therefore to go very quickly to the hospital, but this was far away, and nobody could transport her. Sidi called Serge, who he hardly knew. Serge asked a cart, pulled by a donkey, and he paid, asking the driver to led Sala as quickly as possible to the hospital. Then birth happened in the best conditions. The friendship between Serge, Sidi and Sala is still going on. When we arrived in the little village where the family lives, we were surrounded by Sidi, Sala, by Sidi’s brothers and sisters and tenths of children (39 people). After half an hour, all asked us to be portrayed, but the only difficult thing was to obtain that they kept natural and dynamic attitudes in front of the lens. This was an afternoon of happiness.
