Description

November 28th, 1944 and USS Ross DD-563 is docked in ARD-19 (floating dry dock), when a Nakajima KI-44 “Tojo” deflected off the number four 5/38 gun and crashed into the starboard wingwall of the ARD. Fortunately the pilot did not arm his bomb and the crew was able to dispose of it over the side. The Ross was being worked on after hitting two mines on October 19th. The mines destroyed both engine rooms and killed 25 crew members. Eventually the Ross was towed all the way back to San Francisco, was repaired and returned the Pacific theatre in time for the surrender of the Imperial Japanese government in 1945.
