It makes sense if you don't think about it. Skill in dealing with spooks can allow more steps when the car just misses you at the curb. I saw three rednecks in a pickup roar out of a house ahead as I approached. A white and tawney cat had gone across the road to sit. They first swerved onto the road squeeling their tires then as the cat ran back across the road swerved onto the shoulder to try to hit it before running up the road to the corner. I could clearly see the back of three hards silhouetted in the pickup rear window as they waited for traffic. When I came to the place they had entered the road I looke right and saw not a cat but a large dog looking at me.
