Rodney is a loveable scamp. You might think of him as a 500 pound Parson Russell Terrier. Rodney is bright and full of energy. He is always getting into trouble because "it seemed like a good idea at the time." Rodney is always very sorry about the trouble he causes, but will soon go right back to his mischief. He likes nothing better than to sneak up on his best friend, Rennita, and startle her by poking her in the back with his finger. Rennita would like beat him at his own game, but knows it's not likely. Rodney is just too fast and stealthy. Still, Rodney is a great pal to have around whenever a girl runs into a bit of trouble. Rodney was Rennita's invisible friend, when she was three years old. Back then, he was no bigger than her. When she told grownups about Rodney, they all laughed, but over the years, Rodney grew bigger--much bigger--and visible. Nobody laughs about Rodney now. Rennita is fourteen years old and wants to have a boy for a friend but she has a problem. Rodney is very loyal and devoted to her, but also a tad bit jealous, too. All the local boys avoid her because her protector makes them justifiably nervous. Don't go feeling sorry for Rennita, though. Rodney is very sensitive to all her moods and eventually he realizes that his jealousy is causing her to be sad. He hates to see her feeling down, so he learns to curb his possessiveness. One day, Rodney brings a boy to Rennita. Opening his mouth, he drops the terrified lad at Rennita's feet. The boy scrambles to his feet and runs away. The next day, Rodney brings another boy; and the same thing happens. A dozen boys later, Rodney drops the latest boy in front of Rennita. "Hello, Malcolm," Rennita said to the stunned boy, when he remained sitting on the ground. "Hel-hello," mumbles Malcolm. Keeping a wary eye upon Rodney, he slowly climbs to his feet and dusts off his pants. "Don't worry," Rennita assured him, "He won't hurt you." "I know," replied Malcolm. Rennita looked at him, puzzled. "The other guys. They all said that although he scared them something awful, he hadn't actually harmed them--although he did slobber them pretty good." "Then you didn't try to run away from him, when you saw him coming?" "Naw. I actually went looking for Rodney." Rennita stared at Malcolm in disbelief. "Why?" Malcolm�s face turned red. "Well,--um--you're an awfully pretty girl, Rennita. I didn't think Rodney would allow me be with you unless it was his idea." He looked over at Rodney and smiled.
