Description

My first attempt to digital matte painting. Quick process description: 1. Photoshop - Altering original shot taken at Kenilworth Castle (changing background, adjusting colours etc.) - Breaking the image to separate layers (arcs, towers, walls) 2. 3DS Max - Creating simple meshes to match the PS layers and camera to match the perspective - adding ivy objects and the character. - rendering basic image in VRay - additional render passes for atmosphere 3. Photoshop (again) - final compositing - colour correction - ageing Below image are some screenshots from the process. Update: nucks asked about time I spend on this. It took me about 16 hours to complete the image.

Wow, the first time that a picture on Renderosity is of a place I know. The process images make it all the more remarkable. Very clever and very effective.

The finished result is beautiful and has tremendous atmosphere and depth - and because you've re-purposed it to use in a 3D world - now you can do anything you want with it. I appreciate the process you shared - thank you, I think it's so valuable to see how something like this takes form, you really must have a clear vision of not only the end, but the intial photo too and seeing the potential it carries. Kudos! And thanks for sharing... How long did the process take you from beginning to end?

I hate to say this, but your version is so much more fabulous then the photo of the real thing! The atmosphere, the lighting, just everything is so awesome! Your first attempt knocks my socks off! You make the process seem so simple, but I bet if I were ever to try something like this, it would take a lifetime!
