Description

Oudewater is a municipality and a town in the Netherlands, in the province of Utrecht. Oudewater has a monumental protected city centre with more than 250 protected houses. Oudewater is famous for the Heksenwaag (Witches' scales). This Weighing house, an official town building, became famous during the 16th century because people accused of witchcraft were offered an honest chance of proving their innocence. In many cities and countries such trials were usually rigged, resulting in the burning or drowning of hundreds of innocent people. The Waag is still open as a tourist attraction, and official certificates are available. Take care, beware of the witch hunters, they are short sighted

A really great capture! Unfortunately, I think all witch hunts were sad. I think people then were terrified by the unknown and a lot of ordinary people died because of it.

The disposition of the houses would come to be something like that like a Dutch Venice...!!! #:O) The history is really impressive, many innocent people they were accused of witchcraft since many unscrupulous people they wanted to appropriate of the possessions . It is a dark and sad period of the humanity's history. Fantastic picture roc

So nice of you to display the building where I since a few weeks work in in your gallery (the left white building) ;-) It sure is a pretty nostalgic little town here...
