Description
I dedicate this to all our UK members.this bridge formerly was in London, but was purchased by the founder of Lake Havasu, Arizona.it was disassembled stone by stone and shipped to Arizona
LAKE HAVASU CITY, ARIZONA
In 1962, London Bridge was falling down. Built in 1831, the bridge couldn't handle the ever-increasing flow of traffic across the Thames River. The British government decided to put the bridge up for sale, and Robert McCulloch, Founder of Lake Havasu City, Arizona, and Chairman of McCulloch Oil Corporation, submitted the winning bid of $2,460,000.
The bridge was dismantled, and each stone was numbered. Everything was shipped 10,000 miles to Long Beach, California, and then trucked to Lake Havasu City. Reconstruction began on September 23, 1968, with a ceremony including the Lord Mayor of London, who laid the cornerstone. On October 10, 1971, the bridge was dedicated.
London Bridge crosses a narrow boating channel that connects with Thompson Bay on the Arizona side of Lake Havasu. Prior to the arrival of London Bridge, the land upon which the bridge was placed was a peninsula. A large dredge was used to carve a one-mile channel, removing over two million cubic yards of rock and earth in the construction phase. Water was then diverted from the lake, under the bridge and then back into the lake through Thompson Bay. On the Google Map aerial view, the pushpin marked "A" is the London Bridge Resort, and just to the left is McCulloch Boulevard and the location of London Bridge.

They used to have a recording of English sparrows chirping in the trees and a gift shop with a Navajo lady selling "English" stuff (and turquoise jewelry) It was pretty amusing! Though I can't complain--my school library at Scripps was some small Spanish chapel they brought over by boat from Europe. I'm just waiting for the Rockefeller Center to be transferred to Tokyo! If the dollar goes any lower it will cost only a couple thousand yen;-)

There was a lot of anger about the bridge being sold Richard, I remember reading stories in the press and seeing pictures of it being reassembled in 'the desert' as they put it. Great capture and nice to know that it is still standing and doing a service, a service that it was no longer of performing here in England. Thanks for the dedication(from all the English), a very nice gesture, I appreciate it. Excellent work. Bravo!!!!!

There was a made for TV movie in the 90's that featured this bridge. Somehow Jack the Rippers spirit got infused into the stone and he started a new killing spree in Lake Havasu, until our wily heroes (Stephanie Krammer from Hunter series, and that guy from Baywatch and Nightrider) were able to stop him. On a scale of yawns, 1-5 with 5 being a total put you to sleeper, I'd give it 2 yawns. Not the best or worse movie ever made. :O)
