.:great work, can I ask? the lens flares, are they from the cannon fire? I love the weight you've given the ships - Great atmosphere:.

Of everything in this wonderful image, it's that bow wave that really catches my eye. Very well done, Rick.

Trice up the lower Courses. To protect itself from flaming debris or accidental gunpowder discharge from the decks, the lower sails of the masts would be furled, to reduce the chances of catching fire. This would be known as Battle Dress. And you have 2 pairs of lines going through the Spanker sail on the Mizzen mast of the ship on the right. Also, you have rendered both sets of sails that were provided by the original modeler for different weather configurations. Both sets would not be shown. And the bow wave on the ship on the left is too big. The surface of the water shows this to be a calm sea, no wind, so the ships would not be moving fast enough to create such a large wave. And also, you would have to show different sails set for the wind conditions, since both ships are sailing in opposite directions, requiring a different configuration for each.

thanks for the corrections, FitArtistSF, i knew someone would catch something a little "wrong" with the picture. Be said I am not a sailor and so this picture was done from a "land lubber's" perpective. i felt that the bow wake was a little large for the ship, but though I played with diffrent sizes, what seemeed to work the best was what was rendered. I didnt even notice the two sets of sails on the varrious masts. Good eye. All in all it is still a fun picture and was inspired by the pirates of the carribian movies I hope you have not spoiled the fun for everyone else who views it though.

Spectacular battle scene! Love the muzzle flare and impact shots from the cannons. On a gripe point - The wake at the prow of the facing ship bothers a bit, it seems a little out of sorts with the calm sea they are facing off on. Artistic license, I know, and many others have portrayed great ships in battle like this, and it in no way detracts from the enjoyment of the piece. Exceptional!
