Description

Mt. Etna is the largest active volcano in Europe. It is about 3326m high, but this changes with eruptions. In 1865 the volcano was 21.7m higher than today. Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is in an almost constant state of eruption (Wikipedia). The volcanos most famous and devastating eruption occurred 1n 1669. In 1971 an eruption destroyed the observatory at the summit, and another in 1983 destroyed the old cable car and tourist centre. Nine people died in an explosion at the south east crater in 1979, and another two died and 10 were injured in another explosion at the crater in 1987. It again erupted in 1992 (Lonely Planet, Italy, 1993). The lava flow (visible on the left side of picture) from the eruption that occurred in 2001 reached the road visible in this view. The pov elevation is about 2000m and dozens of craters like the ones in this pictures surround the peak. This picture was taken on 7 July 2007. Thank you for viewing and commenting. Wow Sig - you are one brave man. I would rather try and outrun an elephant than get so close to this famous (?) mountain! Excellent shot. xx

amazing photo.... how quickly plants reestablish, how close this devastating landscape is to large populations, and how truly insignificant people really are in the grand scheme of things. thanks for this one!

Volcanos... one of my subjects of extreme interest. I find them fascinating and although there are so many natural disasters and wild occurances in this world, Volcanos seem to be the most powerful of them all. This photo has so many different components to it and that lava flow is really great! Fabulous capture.

Incredible view Sig, I once went on a family holiday to Fuertaventura small island belonging to the Cannary Islands and I was fascinated by a dormant Volcano in view so one day I took myself and my son who was 10 or 11 yrs old at the time to go see what it was like inside. I looked down and it was green when all around was like your picture. I have pictures of it somewhere, I'll have to dig them out and scan them. Thanks for a nice memory.

fascinating capture, especially knowing how many grievances it has caused and how many more it can.
