Description

You know how when you run over an ant mound, there is a sudden flurry of intense activity with the ants (a) trying to find you, the intruder and sting the daylights out of you, and (b) trying to recover all their larvae and pupae and take them underground to safety? Well, this mound is missing at least one pupae. Anyone who has ever been bitten by a fire ant will know why I call them mighty. At only 1/8 to 1/4 inch long, their stings pack quite a whollop and leave a red blistered sore that takes a week to go away, two weeks if you can't resist scratching. Thanks for looking and thank you very kindly for your recent comments.

the ant larvae looks like rice to me.I love rice and hate fire ants.when I lived in Houston in between being a safe technician and locksmith, I some how got corralled into servicing some car washes.one way out in the middle of no where had an infestation of fire ants that would not quit. the relays would last maybe 2 weeks until the ants short circuited them. exceptional focus and clarity Maria

This is what I stepped into in Austin taking the picture of the blue bonnets. It was 10 days before the blisters broke and the scabs fell off. I always watched for fire ants when I lived in Texas. I am so glad I live out here where there aren't any - for the time being. Great shot of this grizzly child.
