Good day or good evening! Here is another night scene from Berlin, and it`s no secret that I love these night shots very much, maybe more then these at daylight... The scene is situated in the middle of Berlin near the river Spree and shows the "Theatre am Schiffbauerdamm". This was Berlin`s most famous theatre in the Roaring Twenties of the last century, and it is one of the leading houses of Germany till today. This was the workingplace of Bertolt Brecht and his composer and partner Kurt Weill, who created a total new style of theatreplaying and socialcriticism in their work. This two visinary men established this house in only 10 jears between 1923 and 1933 as Europes leading theatre. Their most famous work was "Die Dreigroschenoper", first played here 1928, and the song of "Mackey Messer" was a worldwide hit. After 1933 Brecht and Weill went to the USA and worked in Hollywood. With their socialcritic work they were not very lucky there, and in the early 50ies Brecht get more and more trouble with the McCarthy- Commission. Going back to Germany Brecht and Weill decided to live in the DDR, the communistic part of Germany. They founded here in this theatre, were all had begun, the "Berliner Ensemble", and Brecht got all artistic freedom he needed for his work from the communistic leaders. He was leader of this theatre and the ensemble till he died. This theatre was even in communistic times one of the leading houses in Germany and a must-be even for West- Berliners.
