Description

Please click to see full size image. As I reached for the door of my vehicle heading to work this morning, sunlight had just made its path through the trees to shine on our little garden spot. The tulips are finished for the year, finished their work as far as people think. The few remaining petals hung like crumpled velvet with tiny hold to the mother plant. In the center, in the light of morning sun, the pistil of a tulip glowed translucent. The work may be finished for us but for the tulip the pollinated pistal is to work more to make seed. Its work is not quite finished. I have not heard of tulip seed or seen such, bulbs being the way we use...but bulbs come from something. : ) Still, the tulip is working to make those seeds of offspring. Enjoy.

Very thought-provoking, Tom. I wonder if seeds have been bred out of tulips, and now they only have bulbs to propogate themselves.

I have heard that the fertilized plant, as it ages and the leaves and stalk dry and begin to whither, sends the sap from the tulip head down the stalk and into the bulb below, which in turn gets extra energy and needed nutrients to produce more lobes on the bulb or begin forming a new kernel sized bulb. This is a very detailed and well presented macro. Very nice lighting.

A beautiful busy little tulip in the last stages of bloom. Very nicely done. Nature never stops.
