Description

I took this shot in early Feb when I was still a little overawed by the number of functions and buttons on my new camera(!)It came I think from the first session I had spent down at the castle with it, and once again was taken with my project in mind (reflections again this time). The shot shows half of the ruined castle, looking out towards the sea. Probably the simplest and most serene pic I have of the castle yet.. (btw, can anyone shed any light on what the pole thing in the foreground is? - still haven't figured that one out...) Adam Edit: - well Rich seems pretty determined to find out what this thing is once and for all, to see what's been offered by the St Andrews student community go here: The Sinner

I asked Rich what the pole was when I saw one of his shots of the castle - no idea mate! Beautiful reflections and pastel sky colours! Excellent!

I'm no expert, but the object sticking out of the water appears to me to be a pole thing. :-) Great picture of the ruins. It would see the sea did a fine job of reclaiming a great deal of its property. Very nice.

Looks to me you have an ability to get a best out of the place where you live or visit. Wonderful mood captured like a stillness of the water.

Excellent capture of the pole thing. The rest of the shot isn't bad either! Just kidding, it's a totally beautiful image, those reflections are amazing!

superb tones and landscape... but i think the compo could be greater if the horizon was lower or higher.

This is bugging me now. I remember being told it was something to do with a diving board or set of stairs to get into the pool... but then no idea why there is just one there... next time you are down there have a look at the concrete wall near the pole to see if there is any sign of fixing. I'm going to pose the question on The Sinner to see if anyone knows... I did some research in the library archives online (amazing how many photo's they have up there). Found this shot which shows "something" in the pool. And this shot was the only full shot of the pool i could find at low tide from a time where it might be conceivable that whatever it was would be recogniseable. Also found this shot which was quite amusing. Agreed about the horizon comment - and the compo could be a little better - the main forms of the image are very central and it seems "unbalanced" - walk to your left and take it from a bit higher up? (easy to say i know - and i have probably taken the same shot myself, but seeing it by someone else makes me think about things more) That will separate the pole from the tower slightly more and give you a horizon higher up the shot :)

thanks everyone for the comments and Rich a nice attempt in uncovering the mystery - I reckon it was an anchoring/securing thingy for a diving board into the pool ;) quite happy to just think of it as a lucky freak accident placed there for photographers to have a foreground subject with the castle though. Probably agree with the composition comments, and prob wouldn't have taken the same shot if it'd been from any time recently but it was from early Feb when I was just starting not to be scared by my camera..(!) Going to head back down for sunrise when I get a chance but that's not likely to be soon, too much work.. =(
