Description

* Frigg, Fri, Frigga, highest of all Goddesses of the AEsir, Wife of Odin, Mother of Baldr and Hoor, Ruler of the Home and Fate, the Queen of the Heavens. Frigg has the power of prophecy yet she does not reveal what she knows. She is the only one other than Odin who is permitted to sit on his high seat Hlidskjalf and look out over the universe. Frigg's companion is Eir, the gods doctor and goddess of healing. Frigg is credited with the ability to see the fate of all mankind, but in her wisdom she is also silent, preventing others from meddling. One of her names is Saga (the 'sayer') suggesting the role of a seeress, a talent apparently shared by Thor's wife Sif. Through her silence Frigg represents the ancient and protected female knowledge. In the older myths Frigg is the divine noble woman and housewife. The minor goddesses serve her and run her errands. She is the embodiment of womanhood and following Germanic tradition she is fiercely equal in authority to her husband. In no less than three of the myths she pits her cunning against Odin, and on each occasion she gets her way. But she is also a mighty and powerful warrioress and leader of the Valkyries and participant of Odin`s Wild Hunt. When Balder was killed the gods were speechless and devastated, unable to react due to their grief. After the gods gathered their wits from the immense shock and grief of Baldr's death, Frigg asked the Aesir who amongst them wished "to gain all of her love and favor" by riding the road to Hel. Whomever agreed was to offer Hel a ransom in exchange for Baldr's return to Asgard. Hermodr agreed to this and set off with Sleipnir, Odins horse to Hel. ~ I wandered the nine worlds - weeping for my lost loves Golden tears glistened - glowing in my footsteps By the sparkling well - at the world's heart I made hearth and home - to be whole once more.
