Description

The Turkey Vulture is a member of the New World vultures, and some recent research suggests they are in fact more closely related to Storks than to The bird of prey family.. Some curious factors come into play with this, First they can smell unlike like Old world vultures, and appear to urinate or defecate on their legs to keep cool, which makes them white. I also had to smile when I read they make a nest under a bush!! The body feathers are mostly brownish-black, but the flight feathers on the wings appear to be silvery-grey beneath, contrasting with the darker wing linings. The adult's head is small in proportion to its body and is red in colour with few to no feathers. It also has a relatively short, hooked, ivory-coloured beak. The irises of the eyes are grey-brown; legs and feet are pink-skinned, though typically stained white. The eye has a single incomplete row of eyelashes on the upper lid and two rows on the lower lid. Thanks again for taking time to look and any comments you care to make

Nice crisp shot Dan. You must travel around a bit, these birds are native to areas around Spain aren't they (i could be wrong)? They are fascinating creatures those Vultures.

AND if you happen up on one by accident when neither of you expect it, they will turn and hiss like a mad cat at you! That from personal experience. :-) They also stink, whether from their cooling habit or because of the putrid, dead smell of lunch on their faces and necks, I don't know. Still, don't let me scare you off. These are the most beautiful of birds in flight - graceful as they ride the air currents so close to the sun. They are an important link in the chain. Stellar capture, Danny, and fabulous information.
