Description

View over “Gallows-water” in Leiden Nowadays this is a fantastic corner in Leiden where you have a nice few over the water, with the Old Fleet in front of you. The city is in land, and these ships are sailing on rivers and canals. The ships are very well maintained, and are mainly used as floating houses. The boats are approximately 100 years old, and the traditional smell from tar, by the ropes and the water is around these ships in the air and bring you back to 1900!! Nevertheless, the name for this part of the river, Canal in Leiden is : Galgewater (Gallows-water) because the executed bodies of criminals used to be hanged at this spot to educate the people to behave well. Entering the city, either over land or over the water, they had a good view over the dead bodies at the gallows which were left behind for weeks!! This was long, long ago, nowadays it’s a very peaceful corner in Leiden Leiden is a pretty, little old town in the west part of Holland. There are quite a few canals and the town is decorated with a number of windmills. Photo has been taken last week, and almost at the same spot as the photo of my yesterdays and day before yesterday upload : 100 years Old Boats , Harbor Front of Leiden & 100 years Old Boats , Harbor Front of Leiden!! I don’t know which out of the three should have my preference so I’m interested to learn about your opinion!! Thanks for your time, Have a very nice day, and I will be away for a couple of days Henk

Leiden is prachtig.. altijd mooi om te bezoeken, maar voooooral in oktober dank voor de mooie begeleidende tekst. is dit niet de plek waar Rembrandt in de buurt geboren is. I think it is the area where famous painter Rembrandt was born

I like the composition and more vibrant color in the 100 yr. old boats shot, but I find this one very interesting because of the history given. One or the other is my favorite, I just can't make up my mind which one. :-)
