Middle sized cities are often on rivers. Large ones, of course, probably also have a sea, lake or river port. The tiny town I grew up in had to make do with a swamp and a small stream called the Pinnebog. Most ly I know drainage ditches dug out by draglines regularly and the kind of steel bridges that go with country and gravel roads. A nice stone bridge with a military figure and possible Roman roots is for Europe. Kids that got drafted or joined the Army got to see such things in person. I only know them from history class or slides taken by a doctor on a trip to his native Germany. I can appreciate your sense of being only in an audience sense.
