Description

You know what is this? I took this pic this morning at mount in Murcia (SW of Spain) and never seen before this bug. The size is double or more than a wasp or bee, and you can see how hairy and strange look is. Hugs and thank youuuu for your visit Luis

Great Shot Luis it can be hard to tell but was it hovering of flying around like a Bee it may well be a hoverfly but the way to tell is by the false vein in the wings or the Arista at the top of its head.. Leaf cutting bees are also large up to 17mm

Fantastic macro! I'm pretty sure that it's some kind of Robber fly (order Diptera, family Asilidae). They have a very distinctive look - and some of the species are very large (large enough to prey on dragonflies in fact!!). Although, which species this is I couldn't say - the family contains 7100 different species worldwide....

Sort of looks like an owl of the insect world. Very strange looking but you've captured it so well!

Leeco could most probably identify it Luis, I go with the Robber Fly theory too much hair and the eyes steer me away from the Hover Fly. Whatever the name is it is a first class macro of a little critter, you have got so much fine detail. An extra click for full size is a must. Superb work. Bravo!!!!!
