Description

The USS Arizona Memorial is a 184-ft. long structure that is spanning the mid-portion of the sunken battleship USS Arizona (BB-39). The memorial consists of three main sections; the entry and assembly rooms; a central area designed for ceremonies and general observations, and a shrine room, where the names of those killed on the USS Arizona are engraved on the marble wall. The desire to establish a war memorial began in 1943 and the memorial was dedicated in 1962. On March 25, 1961 Elvis Presley raised $64,000 in a benefit concert for the construction of the memorial. The hulk of the 31,400 ton standard displacement battleship (608-ft. long, 97.1-ft. wide beam, 29.1-ft. draft lies in 38-ft. of water off Ford Island. It is estimated that about 500,000 gallons of 'Bunker C' oil remains inside the hull and is leaking at about 1 pint per day. It has become an environmental concern. A Japanes high-level bomber dropped a 1760 lb. naval projectile. The bomb penetrated the forward deck of the ship about 40-ft. in from the bow. The resulting explosion ignited aviation fuel stores and the powder magazines for the 14-inch guns, instantly separating most of the bow from the ship and lifting the 33,000 ton vessel out of the water. The explosion and the subsequent fires killed approximately 1000 men instantly. It is assumed that most were killed by the concussion and were burned beyond recognition. The barbette of turret #3 is the only part of the vessel that is visible at all times. Some of the USS Arizona's 14-inch guns were removed and used for coastal defenses. Crew members who were assigned to the USS Arizona on December 7, 1941 have the right to have their cremated remains interred inside the barbette of gun turret four by National Park Service divers. Crew members that were assigned to the USS Arizona before December 7, 1941 have the right to have their ashes scattered over the ship. This picture was taken on 29 October 2005. Thanks for sharing this interesting information Sig. I like the POV to this shot and has great contrasting white against the blue backdrop and looks great with the addition of more colour from the US Flag.

Superb capture Sig and wonderful narrative, makes a very interesting read. Thanks for sharing, this is somewhere I have no hope of getting to see in person. I wouldn't be able to get insurance to fly so it's great to be taken on a world tour by people that can and do get about and post here on Renderosity. I for one appreciate it. Excellent work. Bravo!!!!!

beautiful shot of this memrorial that is so special ... when i was there in 1984, i met an old man in this building who was a survivor on the Arizonia. He held up a nickel...said it was in his shirt pocket the day of the attack and it saved him from the bullet that would have went into his heart... i saw the nickle it had a big bullet dent in it . he told me he has carried the nickle in his shirt pocket every day of his life since for luck ., it made me cry as a 18 year old girl ...i will never forget that!!!

Tribute What ships are these that in ghostly waters lie Bound by phantom sailors not afraid to die Those who left their homelands far across the sea Men who fought for freedom, justice, libery. To those of us much younger Pearl Harbor is history Somewhere in Hawaii, a place of infamy Have you fathers, sons, loved ones buried 'neath the foam? They are gone, but not forgotton by those of us at home.
